My Lovesick Life as a ’90s Otaku Vol. 02
Relive the good old otaku days with this sentimental and comical reflection on a teen’s path to self-acceptance. This nostalgic coming-of-age story is perfect for fans of Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku!
When fan art was painstakingly handmade…
Roped into making dojinshi for the largest otaku gathering, Comiket, Megumi finds herself torn between her love for anime and manga, and her crush on the otaku-hating Masamune. While shopping for supplies, she meets a woman cosplaying on the street. The two click immediately–but Megumi soon finds that the woman has an unexpected connection to Masamune as well…
Biographical Notes:
Born and raised in Miyagi Prefecture, Nico Nicholson debuted in 2008 with Joukyou-san. My Lovesick Life as a ’90s Otaku is Nicholson’s first work published in English.
Title Notes:
Fans who are now in their 30s-50s can bask in nostalgia from this era. Many recognizable anime and manga, such as Neon Genesis Evangelion, Gundam Wing, Tokyo Babylon, Magic Knight Rayearth, and SLAM DUNK are featured in the first few chapters, but do not alienate readers who are not familiar with these series. The references are not the focus of the story and feel more like easter eggs.
Readers who are interested in art and drawing will relate with Megumi, who works on making comic zines and art at her school.
A hot subgenre as seen through Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku!
From fashion to slang to media, Gen Z has a love for the mid-late 90s and early 00s. Millenials (aka ’90s Kids) will enjoy the transport in time.
