Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin MSD Cucuruz Doan’s Island Vol. 04
Based on the legendary “lost” episode from the First Gundam TV series, this is the story of Cucuruz Doan like you’ve never seen it before.
Former Zeon mobile suit squad leader Cucuruz Doan deserted, taking up residence on a small island where he helped to raise a number of orphaned children. But what about the other members of his squad? While the original story was told from federation pilot Amuro Ray’s perspective, Ohno’s limited series goes beyond the original television episode to explore the ramifications of Doan’s actions on his own troops, bringing us a multilayered and emotionally complex view of the events from Zeon’s perspective.
Series Overview: “Cucuruz Doan’s Island” was created as a spin-off of Yoshikazu Yasuhiko’s “Gundam: the Origin” manga, taking up and expanding a story that Yasuhiko had left out of his original series. The story of “Cucuruz Doan’s Island” originally saw the light of day as episode 15 of the original “Gundam” television show, but due to sub-par production it was omitted from later film and manga versions, and was never imported to the US at all. The story therefore has something of a legendary status in the Gundam fan community, and here Junji Ohno has expanded the core of the story into something grander altogether, with the imprimateur of Yasuhiko himself.
