Biographical Notes:
Born in 1963 in Gifu, Junji Ito is the face of Japanese horror. While others came before him, providing well received and recognized inspiration such as Kazuo Umezzu and Hideshi Hino, it was not until Ito broke into the scene that the world truly took notice of the visual and comedic terror that is J-Horror.
Most of Ito’s works feature grotesque imagery of human fetishes and obsessions. Since his debut, Ito has penned more than 20 properties, most of them being short story anthologies commonly read within Japan’s horror fandom.
Title Notes:
A Legendary Comic Artist with an Established and Diverse Readership: Junji Ito has been a cornerstone of the Western Manga scene since its early days. Most of Ito’s books have been translated into English and many other languages. A number of them have been adapted into motion pictures with global distribution as well. Among his fans are Guillermo del Toro and Stephen Spielberg.
The Father of Japanese Horror: J-Horror is one of the pillars of Vertical’s media success. Releases such as the RING, 7 Billion Needles, Parasite Eve and AJIN have been consistent strong performers. Ito’s comics should fit right in with those titles while finding their own unique readership at the same time.
Cross-Promotion Opportunities: Currently three other publishers have recently released Ito’s works in North America. Viz Media, Kodansha USA and Dark Horse have all published Ito’s horror titles over the last two years with successful results. This edition will continue that trend and work together with the other market competitors to co-promote this beloved artist.
