Siddhartha spends a good portion of the book going through the tribulations, meditating and fasting for days on end, till finally he reaches the middle way. Later, he is forced to choose between going back to Kapilavastu, “saving” his family’s honor and reign, or continuing his path to enlightenment. Fortunately, by the end, Siddhartha is enlightened, but Kapilavastu must fall.
